Press release 2012-08-16

Exclusive Alma now available for all!

Anders Ljungberg’s smart build-on candlestick also in stainless steel and cast iron.

2009´s most innovative launch made by a Swedish art-industry company was with out a doubt Mema/GAB’s candlestick made out of silver and cast-iron, designed by Anders Ljungberg. Mema/GAB now allows its’ sister company Gense to manufacture Alma in stainless steel and cast-iron.

Silver corpus from Mema/GAB is a modern luxery, says Monica Törnqvist, Marketing Manager for Mema/GAB and Gense in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Silver as a material is expensive and demands a lot of craftsmanship – when making the candlestick in stainless steel we can manufacture it to a price that is accessible for a larger target group. Alma suits well in both materials.

The idea for Alma came after a brief about collecting which for a long time has been strongly associated with both Mema/GAB and Gense products. The brief was to create a product that could lead to a lifelong collection. Out of this assignment Anders Ljungberg designed a build-on candlestick that can be added to when celebrating christenings, confirmations, birthdays and weddings.

If you choose the cast iron foot and the two-armed candlestick in stainless steel you have a simple candlestick for two candles. With more parts you can build a candelabra, or a light tree, which appearance alternates depending on how many pieces you have. You contribute in making your very own personal light tree with a "tree crown" that can be alternated after one’s taste and liking.

I would choose to have three cast-iron candlesticks with at least three build-on parts. Than I can switch between three two-armed candelabras, or a large candelabrum with lots of branches and two "feet" with a candle in each next to it, says Anders Ljungberg regarding how he would assemble the build-on candlestick for himself.

Anders Ljungberg is one of Sweden’s most renowned and interesting silversmiths, even abroad. His "container/entertainer" from 2002 has become a symbol for present day Swedish silverware and he constantly questions functionality and the way we use objects. Another characteristic for his design is the unexpected combinations of material. He unites the noble silver with materials such as Corian, Silicon and Plexiglas – and now for the first time cast-iron as the complementary material.

The price for the Alma-candlestick is 79,00€, extra arms cost 39,00€ each.

The candlestick is available in selected goldsmiths all across Sweden from the 15th of December 2012.

PRESS RELEASE

Schoonhoven, 16 September 2011

Over ninety submissions received from around the world
for Schoonhoven Silver Award 2012

The Nederlands Zilvermuseum Schoonhoven (Dutch Silver Museum Schoonhoven) has received no less than 91 submissions for the Schoonhoven Silver Award, which is entering its fifth edition in 2012. Silversmiths, designers and artists from all over the world have responded enthusiastically to the museum’s call to ‘come out’. From an array of sometimes very elaborate presentations an expert jury selected 25 participants and invited them to create a new work with which to compete for the Silver Award of the Silver City of Schoonhoven. The selected silversmiths/designers, representing eleven countries including South Korea, Australia, USA and many European countries, will show their very best in pursuit of next year’s prestigious award.

The shortlisted contestants have been asked to create a single object of silver in conformity with predefined criteria. The objects submitted will be appraised in late January 2012 by a jury consisting of Ineke Middag (Director of the Cultural Heritage Centre - Erfgoedcentrum DiEP, Dordrecht), Gijs Bakker (designer, Amsterdam) and Jan Teeuwise (Director of Museum Beelden aan Zee en Sculptuur Insituut, The Hague). In line with its objectives the fifth Schoonhoven Silver Award 2012 will be awarded to the most successful monumental and artistically meaningful object, in which silver is prominently used.

All submissions will be exhibited in the Zilvermuseum from April through to June 2012. The Schoonhoven Silver Award and its associated cash prize of
€ 7,000 will be handed to the winner during a special opening ceremony, in attendance of many guests from the Netherlands and abroad.

The Schoonhoven Silver Award is an initiative of the Silver Art Foundation (Stichting Zilverkunst). The Award has been presented four times since 2001. Since 2010 the organization of the award has been entrusted to the Nederlands Zilvermuseum in Schoonhoven. In redefining its objectives the Zilvermuseum has included innovation of the traditional art of the silversmith as one of its aims. A broadening of the selection criteria for the award sits well within this forward-looking policy aim.

By challenging silversmiths and design artists from all over the world to explore new artistic and technical ground, and encouraging cooperation between the trade of the silversmith and other artistic design disciplines, the Schoonhoven Silver Award creates a platform for the manifestation of significant new developments.
